Sooooooooooo yaaaaaaa.... Just when you thought the world couldn't get any more wild - flares are back.... And we need to talk about it. This is not to take away from all of the other stuff happening in our world that is actually important but perhaps rather something to take our minds off of it all for just a moment because if you stay hyper plugged in, it can start to seem like a super depressing time to be alive. And so, lets talk about these flare legged pants for a moment like it matters shall we? They're back and this time they're bringing slits in the ankles with them.
I'm all for some wide legged jeans or a nice high waisted trouser but as far as my athletic wear goes I feel like I just can't do it (yet). Remember back when Lululemon first came on the scene in the early 2000's??? It was all about the flares that were mostly always black but for whatever reason were offered with a multitude of different colored waistbands, which is how we all justified having multiple pairs.
I remember it all too well because I was in the very early stages of my career as a fitness instructor at the time - this was before boot camps and spin classes were really even a thing. I remember walking through the wet and snowy parking lot to and from the gym during the winter with my pink Nike duffel bag over my shoulder, wearing my Lulu flares with my Ugg boots and getting home being SO excited to take it all off because by that time I was soaked up to my knees!!! What's funny about this is; as clear as this memory is for me, I can't honestly recall if I ever actually wore those flares to workout in. Did you? Or were they just like #fashion that you wore to and from the gym??? It feels like just yesterday and forever ago at the same time. It was definitely forever ago though. Because I also remember that I had a silver Motorolla flip phone inside of my pink Nike duffel bag...
We now have evolved and have access to literally thousands of different amazing workout tights. Flares just plain old don't seem like a good idea at this stage in the game. Not because of how they look either but from strictly a practicality standpoint ya know? Could you imagine taking a spin or barre class wearing flared pants!??!?! Am I wrong??!?
OK I have to confess: I felt the exact same way about biker shorts when they first re-emerged. I've written in the past that at the time, I thought that it was such a crazy trend, that wouldn't last long and that I certainly would never have to get onboard with. Which feels oddly familiar; I may have said the same thing when skinny jeans started to become a thing now that I think about it.
The moral of the story here is that there isn't one, but if there had to be its probably that I am a late adopter. I did eventually give biker shorts a chance and now I'm obsessed. I own a pair in every kind of fabric, cut and color and I couldn't imagine my life without them. Lucky for me and everyone else who loves biker shorts this spring marks the 3rd or 4th season that they're IN.
But I just can't see myself ever feeling that way about an athletic wear flare and I'm having such a hard time wrapping my head around this one...
If there is any truth to the theory that fashion trends recycle themselves every 20 to 30 years, then it's happening regardless of my ability to digest the thought and its not just going to be a temporary thing. And while no one of us can say for sure exactly what's going to happen with flares we can speculate: biker shorts were the big thing in the late 80s and most of the 90s. Until flares showed up and took over in the late 90s and early 2000s. Which as far as the trend recycling theory goes puts us right on schedule to have them joining the party whether we all like it or not.
If this happens can we please make each other a promise right now???
This is important and I think you'll agree:
Can we all promise that regardless of what we each decide as individuals with flares that we will NEVER welcome low waisted pants back into our closets no matter what??? Because if we all stand together and stay united I think we can make sure that we get to keep all of the high waisted garments that we have come to know and love despite how our husbands and boyfriends may feel about them!
Do what you want about the flares girly, that's your choice. But we need to be strong when the trend recycle machine comes to do away with our high rises.
We musn't let it. We've come too far to go back there.
Are you with me!???!!
